But that’s what happens when you lump all Asian countries together and pretend that works. Kai’s is listed as Earthen/Asian – and again, what the hell does that mean? There are dozens of Asian countries, his name (Kaito) is Japanese (I fixed from earlier that said Chinese), so why not say he’s Japanese? Well, I guess maybe because the Capitol is in China, so that might create confusion. Wolf’s race is also somewhat ambiguous (on her website Meyer says “think Middle Eastern” and I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean), and Jacin and Thorne are white. Although I understand there is a book with the compilation of short stories, but I have no interest in it.Ĭinder’s race is ambiguous and Meyer refused to say outright that she is Chinese (but considering she’s a cyborg alien living in Hong-Kong, some confusion is given, I guess) – and lists her as Asian/Caucasian (so not even nationality just race) but in most fanart she’s white, Scarlet and Cress are white as well.
But it was nice to finally have the series wrapped up and done. The book does have it’s strong points, in that it’s interesting (even though it’s way too long), we get to see the characters improve, and all of them get their happy endings (to a point). It was a fun series that was by no means perfect or that great, but I did expect some improvement not only in the world building (which is underdeveloped and severely problematic) but also the heteronormativity.
It took me a few months to get to reading this book, mostly because I wanted to reread the rest of the series before reading the concluding book and the other because my affection for this series has diminished to the ‘meh’ territory.
